The transmitter is located at Waltham-on-the-Wolds, 5 miles north-east of Melton Mowbray and
is east of the A607 between Grantham and Melton Mowbray. It has a 315 metres steel tubular mast.
The main structure height to the top of the steelwork is 290.8 metres with the UHF television aerials
contained within a shroud mounted on the top.
A mast built in 1966 but on 16th November before it had opened , it collapsed. Transmissions
were to have begun in the summer of 1967.
The structure was rebuilt in 1968 by the BBC and its first transmissions of BBC2 began on 31st August 1968.
ITV began from February 1970 and BBC1 from August 1970.
The mast was originally built to provide BBC2 (on the new UHF 625 lines system) to the East Midlands.
It became the main mast for ITV's Central East Midlands from 1982 and BBC East Midlands from 1991.
Previously it had carried broadcasts from Birmingham.
It is now the main TV transmitter for all digital terrestrial channels covering the East Midlands, serving
most of Leicestershire, Rutland, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. It can also be received in parts of Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
It is owned and operated by Arqiva. It is now a group A transmitter.

This Freeview Light Transmitter is a relay of Waltham and serves the village of Parwich in Derbyshire. The original picture of the wooden pole was taken by me some years ago. Today (May 5th 2021) I went back and took this photo of the metal pole as it now is. This involved a trek up the hill but it was well worth it. The two transmit aerials are at the top and the single receiving aerial for Waltham is at the bottom.
